EdinbaneEdinbane is a small crofting township 6 miles from Dunvegan and 15 miles from Portree, the main population centre on the Isle of Skye.
'Edinbain' in Gaelic means 'the fair face', and it was planned and built
during the nineteenth century.
The original village was planned and built by Kenneth MacLeod of
Greshornish, known as Coinneach Mor Ghesto. He took great care to see that every craft of the day (carpenter, smithy, stonemason etc) was represented in the village. MacLeod of
Greshornish, who made his fortune as an indigo planter in India, built the first hospital on Skye at Edinbane. In many of his schemes he was a man before his time. The hospital, still used for
senior citizens, exists to this day.
Facilities at Edinbane include the village shop and post office, two hotels providing bar meals as well as full restaurant facilities with live music featuring regularly in both establishments. The pottery supplies some of the highest quality ceramics available in the Highlands and Islands.

Skinidin
Skinidin, meaning bleached dun, lies on the shores of Loch Dunvegan on the road from Dunvegan through to Glendale. Historically it is believed that there were three duns, or forts, in the area built to protect the peninsular. A nunnery, known as the
'Sheiling of the women' was also said to have existed in the township. 'Braevalla' means
"at the head of the village" and it is here that the
Chalets are situated at a traditionally powerful and sacred place, the confluence of two burns at the foot of a flat topped mountain called Healabhal
Mhor. Entry to the chalets passes the old smithy, now a ruin.

The nearest shops and bars are in Dunvegan where you will find a bakery, two general stores, a post office and probably the best fruit and vegetable shop on the island - 'the Fruit and Nut Place', opposite the Misty Isle Hotel. Three other hotels, Atholl Place, the Dunvegan Hotel and The Tables, along with a restaurant (the Old School House) and the famous Dunvegan Castle completes the list of locally available facilities along with a Tourist Information
Centre.
